Question
My hair is relaxed and about shoulder length. The thing is, I don't like how I look with short hair and really just want locks now. I was natural before and could grow out my hair but I don't want to transition. I want locks now. Can I lock my relaxed hair?Answer
Yes you can! Do you want to? Well, that is the question I have for you. Locking relaxed hair isn't always cute... though it can be. It all depends on your method. Your relaxed hair will be really thin and unravel fairly easily if you do it naturally but there are many methods that can be fairly low maintenance and beautiful. Here are several of the best ways to lock relaxed hair naturally and unnaturally.- Braidlocks. You would simply plait your hair in the desired sections and maintain the roots as you would regular locks. You have to be careful not to wash your hair daily. This can still cause unravelling. I suggest securing the ends of your hair together while washing and drying to
- Interlocking. This method knots your hair from root to tip. Check out the blog post on What is Interlocking to find out more about the process.
- Braids extensions. This method is quite effective. Add braids extensions to your hair. Wash regularly and maintain the roots as you would with locks. Kanekalon extensions last longest. When your locked section is long enough for you to be comfortable without the extensions or when you start to dislike the two textures, cut off the extensions and you will have only locks. I have seen people do this successfully for up to 9 months.
- Lock extensions. These are basically artificially created locks. Check out videos on YouTube about the process. This can be done on any type of hair but is the most pricey method and so is often not selected. Also, this must be done at an established, professional loctician if you want to ensure good results.
Tips!
Wait until you have at least 3 months of new growth to begin the locking process. You don't want thin, relaxed roots that aren't strong. Also, it will probably be easier to maintain your parts if you have a little thickness at the root/base of your lock. This will help to keep your lock in place.See some people who have started their locks with relaxed hair.
